In 1976, NBC wanted to renew its identity to its 50th anniversary and presented a brand new logo built around an abstract letter " N " of two trapezoids, one red, one blue.
It needs to be used in the first electronically animated identity for an American television network and officially was used from 1 January 1976. The design was developed by Lippincott and Margulies. It cost between $ 750,000 and $ 1 million, a fortune for the 1970s.
Unfortunately, nobody noticed that it was almost identical to the logo for Nebraska Educational TV, which is part of a network PBS.
In February last filed a lawsuit about trademark infringement, extrajudicial settlement of NBC gave Nebraska ETV new equipment worth over $ 800,000 and paid them 55 000 USD to cover the costs of the design and implementation of a new logo. (That seems especially high, considering that NETV spent less than 100 dollars for a development of the original logo).
